It is maddening that every single light fixture and outlet has its very own switch. You need to turn on a switch to be able to make the outlet work. In our living room alone there are 15 switches. We have had to label them with tape so we don't spend half our day figuring out which are the light switches. What is ridiculous, other than having a switch for each item, is that the light switches in some rooms are on the opposite side of the room. So you have to walk through a dark room and risk tripping over stuff before you get to the switch.


This is a photo from a very small shop we went into. It must be no bigger than 10 x 10, yet it had all these switches. God knows for what.

I guess these switches must be to help save electricity, given that there are frequent forced power outages during the hot months to help save power. During the outages that last anywhere from 10 minutes to 5 hours, it's miserable in 110 degree heat in a 3rd floor apartment. Luckily the weather has cooled and people blast their a/c's less, so not so many outages.





Also a common sight is very low hanging power lines that are cut. My mom almost ran into one today. Who knows if they are active, but I don't want to find out. India's new motto should be "Safety first."
