HAWAII

We spent 11 days in Hawaii for our belated honeymoon/ 2-year anniversary. First we went to Kauai, then Maui.

These next 3 pictures are of a single banyan tree imported from India in the 1800's. It takes up 2/3 of an acre and has 12 major trunks.

Sunrise on Haleakala

We woke up at 2am in order to drive 2 hours to the summit of the 10,000 foot volcanic crater Haleakala for the sunrise. It was amazing!

If you look closely, you can see the clouds draping over part of the crater. It was a really neat effect.

After the sunrise, we did a half-day hike inside the crater. The first half of the trail was all down hill, but the uphill return trip was especially fun given the trail was made of sand. It was an aptly named trail, Sliding Sands.

Much of the trail looked like we were on another planet. This picture especially reminded us of the days we lived on Mars. Oh, how we miss home.
