8 MONTHS!

It is hard to believe that we have been living in India for 8 months already! We feel very lucky to be living this crazy life and are really excited for what the next year brings now that we are past the initial hiccups that come along with getting settled. Most importantly, our recent “victories” include having our water problem finally fixed (knock on wood) and a checking account so no more ½ days to pay bills in person.

Here are some of our observations/experiences so far:

1. delhi is very cold in the winter, as in 40 degrees without central heating

2. delhi is very hot in the summer, as in 115 degrees. but once you get acclimated, 90 degrees feels a bit chilly.

3. do not ask "why," unless you want to be sorely disappointed

4. subway means underground passage here, not a metro rail. we found this out the hard way after crossing 6 lanes of heavy rush hour traffic twice in an hour (almost as long as it took us to cross), only to realize too late that is what the nearby subway was for.

5. papa john’s tastes great when you are sick of indian food, and Chinese food is the better than in the U.S. and the best non-Indian ethnic food you’ll find here

6. nearly every middleclass family has a "servant" in addition to a cook/maid. when we express frustration at needing to go to the bank 3 times and the electric office 4 times to pay a simple bill, we are met "why don't you just send your servant?"

7. you never know when you will see some crazy sight, like an elephant walking down your street, a guy riding a horse and talking on his cell phone, or a man riding on the back of a scooter holding a large sheet of unprotected glass.

8. we get home-cooked food for nearly an entire month and our house cleaned 3 times a week for just $40 a month. such a difficult life we lead.

9. most people here know at least 3-4 languages

10. someday when you come home from work, your mailbox might have been cemented over. See #3.
